"Ariel--Zodiac Serval Priestess" - When I was 12 or so, I created a winged serval character named Ariel who controlled zodiac stones and the spirits trapped inside of them. A lot of the entities were vicious and cantankerous beings from what I can remember. (In the old stories I wrote.) I decided to draw Ariel in a more anthropomorphic form, but I think I prefer her old quadruped body over this one. (With black wings) Her astrological sign is Cancer, hence the purpose of all the moons surrounding her.

"Brother Eagle" - This is Brother Eagle, illumination of the spirit, a healer, and creator. A messenger from the heavens, and the embodiment of the sun's spirit. Because of Eagle's connection with the Creator, I incorporated it into the picture. The black feathers the eagle is wearing belong to a crow - a symbol of creation, magick, and spiritual strength.

"Dendroica cerulea" - A brightly-coloured female Cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea) in a fantasy-esque setting. She's representative of my first Cerulean warbler; I saw her by my house when I was younger. In the past 30-35 years, the Cerulean warbler population has dropped nearly 70%. They depend heavily on mature deciduous forests.

"Elk Medicine" - Drawn while I was in a major art slump. One of the things Elk (Wapiti) teaches is to pace oneself, enabling the individual to gain more endurance.

"Evanescence" - A portrait of my sister's colour-shifting gryphon, Evanescence. The scanner chopped off pieces, blah. DISCLAIMER: She has absolutely nothing to do with that atrocious, whiney gothic band. A vocabulary lesson: Evanescence: n. the event of fading and gradually vanishing from sight. She does what her name implies. My sister created this character years before the band even appeared. Evanescence is copyrighted to Grace Muchmore. (She's oh so tired of the e-mail floods. If you like the band, fine, but don't be obnoxious about it.)

"Gypsy of the Forest" - This is a red-phase eastern screech owl. I was inspired by their ghostly mating calls that I often hear during summer nights; for some reason they bring magick and gypsies to mind. The owl is holding the feather of an American kestrel, its daytime hawk equivalent. As for the barred gray feathers - they belong to a gray-phase screech owl. The ethereal 'mist' towards the right of the image depicts a tree, in which the owl is conjuring up.

A smiling Hermit Thrush. I quickly doodled this after having one visit my yard on a regular basis. I added the musical note out of silliness, and because these birds are recognized for their ethereal song--the reason for their nickname: "American Nightingale"

"Heron's Gift" - Little Green Heron was given the gift of prismatic colour for one day. She loved it of course, but did not keep her colour change permanent--because she loved the old ones that suited her so well even more. My mind was wandering quite a bit when I came up with the concept. This was created with a combination of coloured pencil and Photoshop; the heron itself was done in coloured pencil, and then different elements (i.e., the sparkles--one by one!) were added in Photoshop after scanning. I'm a Photoshop newbie.

"Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk, and the Sun Spirit" - As the spirit of the sun burst into one thousand golden birds, Northern Harrier and Rough-legged Hawk carried them across the new sky--lighting up the entire world. (Ring-necked pheasant feathers on the left, by the way.) My scanner mauled this poor piece.

"Lady Owl" - Lady Owl and her cloak of stars. (Eagle Owl) Again, coloured pencil and Photoshop; this was another older drawing I decided to fix up. She was originally drawn for a Halloween picture last year.

"The Eagle of Loch Treig" - An illustration from one of my favorite Celtic fairy tales. This style is slightly different than my usual, as I tried to make it look more like an illustration one would find in a children's story book.

"Ice Queen" - This snowy owl represents the season of winter. She is adorned with a lynx claw necklace and willow ptarmigan feathers--another species of bird that is capable of surviving harsh winters. Other animals present include a snowshoe hare, a Canadian lynx, a timber wolf, a caribou, and migrating trumpeter swans.

On March 1st, 2004, a friend and fellow cystic fibrosis patient passed away. Some of you may have seen the flyer we were passing around to find lobe (lung) donors for Allie; 5 were found. Days before her donors were to be tested, the disease blew out the light. She was only 17 years old. Allie reminded me of a beautiful mourning dove, so that was the inspiration for this picture--she's flying away into the Creator's arms. Rest in peace, Allie, I love you.

"The Gryphon Queen" - The queen of gryphons sitting back on her haunches, enjoying a glass of red wine. (No, not blood, you sanguinary crazies.) Behind her are green silk curtains, embellished with beads and jewels. She is swirling the wine in her glass; a technique that releases its aroma.
