This picture is the direct result of the spiffiest new product out there, colored mechanical pencils! freakish fish copyright to me.
A few months ago I went to a several-day presentation called "The Business of Being an Artist." This day didn't have much to do with that, but it was fun anyway. I immediatly saw this kitty in a piece of marbleized paper he handed to me, I love this kind of stuff. You might have to look a little bit; the pencil lines kind of disappear, too.
Well, this page was inspired by some comments in the forum *waves to Lorcat and Cricket*.:) Justin explains the awesome power of possums....or something like that!
I dunno who started it, but every year around early June, the Southern California types 'round here gather in Orange County for a little gathering called the Fur-B-Q. It's gotten bigger in recent years, but it was intended as sort of an alternative setting to a con, a chance to get outdoors, hike, cook up some burgers, hang out with pals. Somehow I got suckered into doing the flyer for it, and it's been a tradition ever since. ;) The demented little otterdude here is Dume, a character I created originally for a t-shirt. :) This was the flyer for 2000.
Here's the Fur-B-Q flyer for 2001. Many, many thanks to Loran for helping me with the mega-soaker-gun. (He did a quick trace in Flash, which I ported back into Illustrator and 'fitted' to the characters.) Just for the record, the little raccoon guy with the water pistol isn't Jonas; he's Rand, another raccoon character (gasp!) I created. He started out as a totally random no-plot character, just kind of this irritable little woodlands guy that I'd doodle in page margins. I might stick him and Dume in a comic together, one of these days.
And here's the Fur-B-Q flyer for 2002. You can't really read the fine print, but Dume's bag of chips reads: "Chipitos! New Cool Jalapeno BBQ Flavor!" Otters rock, I must say. This one was an effort to trace, with so many characters and layers and stuff, but it was worth it in the end. :) After she saw it, a friend asked me: "How can you skewer clams with a fork?" I just said, "They're 'toon clams. Like everything in a cartoon, they have the consistency of marshmallows." ;)
And here's...Jedi Lyosha. She's so down with the Force, she don't even need pants. I had to upload this, or else she'd gnaw my face off. ;)
A quick doodle of a 3-eyed wolflike dragon's head done in pencil and markers. Huwei.
Well, Nothing new here sadly, but I wanted to try out the art manager, and had this thing I colored for my forum avatar laying around. So I figured, What the heck?
Happy Birthday Tappy Cat! You old fart. *POKE!*
I am such a fangirl :) I used this image for my Anthrocon 2002 badge. I eventually want to make a t-shirt out of this! Character and art © Heather Wasneuski, 2002.
My original plan for this picture was that each of the seasons was represented, but it did'nt quite turn out that way. I have mixed feelings about this one. I like it overall, I just wish the coloring on her kimono came out a little better. I think I am getting fond of colored pencil backgrounds though. I experimented with my coloring style a bit on this one... I'm really trying to practice drawing more backgrounds. Pic done with Prismacolor markers and colored pencil on Bristol. Art and Character © Heather Wasneuski, 2002.
These are the first draft character designs for a new story/cartoon idea I came up with. I'm very happy with what I have so far plot and character personality wise. For the design of the dogs I wanted them to be semi-realistic but still simple enough to be animatable. Anyway, I would really appeciate some feedback on this since I'm still fleshing out these designs. Thanks!
This took four scans and putting it together cause it is on a larger paper and took me good 5 hours to draw. Currently working on coloring not sure what colors to make the dragon though...classic green perhaps?
erm ahrr, eesa drunk monkey, ahar.
hmm, 'ee got 'es 'ead choped off! the scanner was being weird, i swear. anyway, one of the designs for my grif char, streakinsharidin.

An ancient Theran Heiroglyphic that I did completely with PSP7. Yup, it's another Dorinican religion piece. Something like this would most likely be seen in an ancient Theran temple.
